Data Collection
Data collection enables administrators to collect device configuration information, the system logs, and resource database information, and submit them to a specified email address or a specified directory of a server.
Operation Procedure
- Click the System Management tab, and then click System Configuration >> Data Collection to enter the data collection configuration page.
- Enter the company name, phone number, and other basic information. Enter the compression file name, select a delivery mode, and then enter the email address or FTP server address.
- Select device information to be collected in the Device Configuration section, and then select devices.
- Select the system information to be collected in the system Options section.
- Add an introductory file as an attachment, if any.
- Click OK to go to the result page.
Parameters
- Delivery Options: Sends collected data files to a specified email address, uploads them to a specified directory of a server, or saves them to a specified directory of the system server or of the primary system server in a distributed deployment.
- Debugging Information: Select the option to collect the debugging output after you execute the debugging commands on devices.
- Crash Logs and Crash Data: Select the option to collect crash logs and stack function information generated by devices. The information is used for analyzing the failure reasons and locating the software and hardware problems.
- Device Asset Information: Select the option to collect device asset information, for example, the cards and interfaces of each device, recorded in the network asset manager.
- Device Configuration: Select the option to collect configuration files saved on devices. When a device fails, you can collect the configuration information of the device to check whether the device configuration is correct.
- Neighbor List: Select the option to collect Layer 2 neighbor information of a device discovered through LLDP. The information includes the MAC address and IP address of each device directly connected to the device.
- Access Terminal Information: Select the option to collect MAC address and IP address information learned on the interfaces of switches.
- Execute Commands: Select the option to execute commands separated by semicolons (;) and collects the command execute results.
- Resource Database (Topology Information): Select the option to collect the database file of the system resource component, including the devices and users managed by the system and the topology information.
- Collect the system Logs: Select the option to collect foreground and background system logs and remote agent site logs.
Precautions
- You can select a maximum of 50 devices at a time to collect device information.
- When the system is configured to collect the debugging information for devices, the "Debugging information successfully collected" message might appear when the debugging information fails to be collected for a device. This problem is caused by a too short timeout period for the communication between the system and the device. To solve the problem, set the timeout period to 10 or more seconds for the device.
- The attachment to be added cannot exceed 5 MB in size or contain Chinese characters in its name.
- After the collection task is complete, the data files are compressed to a zip file named compression file name plus timestamp.
- After a data collection task is complete, the following information of each device specified in the task is stored in a TXT file: debugging information, device configuration, crash logs and crash data, neighbor list, and command execution data.
- When the compressed file is larger than the maximum size allowed by the email server, it might fail to be delivered to the specified email address, but the data collection result page prompts "The compressed file is successfully delivered by email." This is relevant to the configuration of the email server used.
- If you select FTP for Deliver by but the Collection Result is the following message, log in to the FTP server and verify that the file is saved correctly:The files have been successfully uploaded. However, it is unable to determine whether the uploaded files have been saved on the server.
- If the compressed file fails to be delivered by email or shared by FTP, SFTP, or saving to the system server, it is only saved on the system server. For the saving directory, see the operation log.
- The FTP or SFTP directory is a relative path based on the FTP or SFTP working directory, and is the FTP or SFTP working directory by default.
- After you import a file to the page and then click OK, the system might not display error messages upon validation failures of other parameters.
