Primary VLAN Configuration
Introduction
Primary VLAN Configuration is used to select the VLAN that a device uses as its primary VLAN. In the factory default configuration, the switch uses the default VLAN (VLAN 1) as the primary VLAN. However, to provide more control in your network, you can designate another VLAN as the primary VLAN.
Because certain features and management functions run on only one VLAN in the switch while DHCP and BOOTP can be configured on each VLAN, a VLAN must be dedicated to manage these features and ensure that multiple instances of DHCP or BOOTP on different VLANs do not conflict with eath other. The primary VLAN is the one used to run and manage these features and data.
Setting a non-default VLAN as primary VLAN means:
- The stacking runs on the specified primary VLAN instead of the default VLAN.
- The switch reads DHCP responses on the primary VLAN instead of the default VLAN.
- The default VLAN continues to be coperated as a standard VLAN except that you cannot change or delete it.
- Any ports that are not specifically assigned to another VLAN are assigned to the default VLAN, regardless of whether it is the primary VLAN.
